In India, like in many international markets, customers seek to acquire affordable cars. Affordability is assessed on a number of cost parameters to include: purchase price, financing cost, running (fuel) & maintenance costs, servicing and insurance costs. So bottom-line, both, the purchase price and the life-cycle costs of ownership are important in assessing the affordability of a vehicle.

Though India has only a few electric vehicles (EVs) on sale, with very few options for ‘affordable electric cars’, we have no doubt, in that, as the Indian electric driving market develops, cheaper electric cars will be available for Indian consumers. However, it is worth adding that emission-free electric cars like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Kona and MG ZS electric SUVs are already available in India.

International markets have seen a significant increase in the availability of battery-electric SUV i.e. all-electric SUVs. It is not surprising to see this increase, as this segment is hugely popular with families, given the practicality of interior seating space and boot space.

Within the e-SUV segment, the choice of affordable electric compact SUVs for families keen on migrating to environment-friendly electric driving is impressive. Pure electric SUVs are becoming hugely popular as these electric vehicles (EVs) are cheap to run, improve air quality (zero-tailpipe emissions) and lower the negative impact on our environment.

Apart from the environmental benefits, small electric cars/ SUVs can save individuals and families a lot of money. Driving an electric vehicle (EV) is cheaper than driving a petrol or diesel vehicle. As an example, in India, filling a full tank of fuel for the internal combustion engine (ICE) Tata Nexon SUV will cost up to Rs 5,000 (assuming an average cost per litre of Rs 100. The Tata Nexon has a fuel tank capacity of 44 L).

In comparison, the Tata Nexon Pure Electric SUV will cost less than Rs 300 for a full EV battery charge (EV Battery size: 30.2 kWh). In India, the average cost for residential electricity is between Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kWh(unit). Therefore the cost to drive per km (or mile) in a pure electric vehicle is substantially lower than a petrol or diesel vehicle.

At an average one can expect a cost per km of Rs 1 for a zero-emission EV, while for an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle, the cost per km could be up to Rs 7 per km. The annual cost savings achieved by switching to electric driving is significant!

Moreover, the latest affordable pure electric SUVs have impressive electric range and can easily meet the needs of most families and individuals. In most cases these e-SUVs can achieve close to 200 miles (WLTP) range and in some cases closer to 300 miles. As an example, the all-electric Hyundai Kona SUV has a WLTP range of 300 miles.

All these electric SUVs are equipped for rapid charging and in most cases the EV battery can achieve 0-80% SOC within 40 minutes. Of course, also keep in mind that more than 80% of the time, electric cars are charged overnight at home using a dedicated charging station. The pure electric SUVs below combine elegance, performance and practicality with ease. There is ample room for children to sit on the rear seats and to carry their school gear and more in the boot. The Mazda MX-30 Electric SUV


The all-electric Mazda MX-30 crossover SUV, is the first production battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from Mazda. The pure electric compact SUV was unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The Mazda electric vehicle (EV) has been positioned for the urban driver, with the Japanese automotive manufacturer following a very similar ethos to Honda-e, in keeping the EV battery size small. Both the Mazda MX-30 and Honda-e use a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion EV battery.

Mazda is unique, in that, one of the key determinants of the EV battery size was the ‘life-cycle’ environmental impact.  According to Mazda, the smaller battery pack has a more positive environmental footprint, challenging some of the conventional wisdom in the electric vehicle sector, with automotive manufacturers aspiring for large EV batteries with longer zero-emission range. 

The electric vehicle is positioned for the young urban commuter and its 35.5 kWh battery size reflects the shorter city commutes.  However, the 124 miles zero-emission electric range can easily be used for weekend getaways.  The battery is supplied by Panasonic. The company has also opted for low-impact and sustainable materials for the inside cabin, to include, recycled plastic bottles and cork harvested from the bark of trees without felling. 

The electric vehicle (EV) has a 6.6 kW AC on-board charger and is capable of DC charging up to 50 kW (0-80%: 36 mins). A perfect step into affordable and fun urban electric driving.

The MG ZS Electric SUV


MG Motor UK Limited (MG Motor), is a UK headquartered British automotive manufacturer, now owned by the Chinese automotive company, SAIC Motor. SAIC is owned by the Chinese government and headquartered in Shanghai. MG was owned by MG Rover up to 2005, before the collapse of the company. Despite the change in ownership, MG cars continue to be manufactured at the historic Longbridge plant in the UK.

The pure electric MG ZS EV was unveiled in 2016 at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The e-SUV was launched in 2017 in China. The MG ZS EV is a practical and affordable electric vehicle (EV), appropriate for families keen to migrate to zero-emission electric driving, but at prices that are affordable.

The Kia e-Niro Electric SUV


Like the all-new Kia Soul EV SUV, the Kia e-Niro pure electric SUV has been positioned for ‘affordability’ and ‘value’. Of course, as one would expect, there is much in common between the two pure electric compact crossovers SUVs from Kia.

The Hyundai New Kona Electric SUV

The Skoda ENYAQ iV Electric SUV

The VW ID.4 Electric SUV


The series production of the all-electric VW ID.4 commenced in August 2020 at the company’s factory in Zwickau (Germany). The ID.3 VW hatchback electric car is also manufactured at the same location. The pure electric ID.4 is a compact crossover, well suited for families, seeking practicality and ample interior space. The ID.4 EV is a good all-rounder and a decent option for those seeking to migrate to zero-emission electric driving.

The all-electric ID.4 SUV will be manufactured in the US in 2022 and is also expected to be manufactured in China. According to Thomas Ulbrich, a Volkswagen board member, “Given the major societal challenges of recent months, the successful start of ID.4 series production is an exception achievement.” The ID.4 is the second electric vehicle (EV) to use the bespoke MEB platform, after the all-electric ID.3.

The pure electric SUV can be charged at home via a dedicated home EV charging station. Those with a 3-phase supply can take advantage of the 11kW on-board charger. The VW ID.4 EV is capable of rapid charging (125 kW) at public electric car charging points (199 electric miles in just 30 minutes).

Ashvin has been involved with the renewables, energy efficiency and infrastructure sectors since 2006. He is passionate about the transition to a low-carbon economy and electric transportation. Ashvin commenced his career in 1994, working with US investment banks in New York. Post his MBA from the London Business School (1996-1998), he continued to work in investment banking at Flemings (London) and JPMorgan (London). His roles included corporate finance advisory, M&A and capital raising. He has been involved across diverse industry sectors, to include engineering, aerospace, oil & gas, airports and automotive across Asia and Europe. In 2010, he co-founded a solar development platform, for large scale ground and roof solar projects to include, the UK, Italy, Germany and France. He has also advised on various renewable energy (wind and solar) utility scale projects working with global institutional investors and independent power producers (IPP’s) in the renewable energy sector. He has also advised in key international markets like India, to include advising large-scale industrial and automotive group in India. Ashvin has also advised Indian Energy, an IPP backed by Guggenheim (a US$ 165 billion fund). He has also advised a US$ 2 billion, Singapore based group. Ashvin has also worked in the real estate and infrastructure sector, to including working with the Matrix Group (a US$ 4 billion property group in the UK) to launch one of the first few institutional real estate funds for the Indian real estate market. The fund was successfully launched with significant institutional support from the UK/ European markets. He has also advised on water infrastructure, to include advising a Swedish clean technology company in the water sector. He has also been involved with a number of early stage ventures.
