Fastest Pure Electric SUVs 2021: The Complete Guide For India

Pure Electric SUV

Overview

Yes, electric vehicles (EVs) are fast, and electric SUVs are no different. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have the distinct advantage of delivering instant torque, which an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle cannot!

If in doubt, look at a traffic light stop that has both these types of SUVs (ICE Vs BEV).  As the signal changes to green, the pure electric SUV will quickly leave behind the diesel and petrol SUV.  The primary reason for the superior acceleration in electric SUVs, is that, electric vehicles deliver ‘peak or maximum torque’ instantaneously, producing immediate acceleration.

However, petrol and diesel vehicles take time to reach maximum or peak torque. In particular, diesel cars are known for being sluggish.  Bottom-line, the better torque performance of pure electric vehicles, further contributes to the ‘fun factor’ in driving EVs compared to conventional cars.

Torque if the ‘turning or rotational power’ of the engine i.e. how much power can an engine produce.  It is sometimes referred to as ‘oomph’ or ‘pulling power’.  The turning power is similar to the power you have turning a wrench. Torque can be viewed as the ‘strength’ of the car.  The greater the torque, the faster the acceleration that propels the vehicle from 0-60 mph, with you pushed against the seat. Torque is measured in Newton Metre (Nm).

Battery-electric SUVs have come a long way over the past few years. In the recent spate of introductions of new pure electric SUVs by mainstream automotive manufacturers, one theme is dominant. EV battery capacity (size) and the emission-free electric range keeps increasing! To learn more about longest range electric SUVs simply follow this link. Another dominant theme is the continued increase in performance of zero-tailpipe emission electric SUVs.

The list of the all-electric SUVs below, combines with ease, performance, fun, style and zero-tailpipe emissions. No wonder, these e-SUVs are fast becoming popular with families of all sizes and needs across a number of international markets!

In due course, we expect a number of these impressive electric SUVs to be introduced to the Indian market. It is worth noting that international automotive manufacturers like Volvo Cars, Jaguar and Hyundai already sell pure electric SUVs in India.

The BMW iX3 Electric SUV

The BMW iX3 electric SUV is an evolution of the conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) BMW X3 SUV. Put another way, unlike many of the recent electric vehicles (EVs) introduced in the market, the all-electric BMW iX3 was not developed on a dedicated electric vehicle platform. However, the German manufacturer has done well in making the most of the incumbent petrol X3 and transforming it to a zero-emission electric vehicle (ZEV).

The production version of the pure electric BMW iX3 was unveiled in July 2020. The e-SUV is being manufactured in China and production commenced in September 2020. The battery-electric vehicle (BEV) SUV has been on sale from this year (2021). For those customers keen on migration to electric driving, but not keen on ‘futuristic styling’, the BMW iX3 BEV is a potential choice, as its design has not changed from the conventional petrol variant. Of course, as one would expect, there is no tailpipe in the electric iX3 and the front grille is different too! Apart from a few other small changes, much is the same!

The electric iX3 will not disappoint in terms of interior quality, comfort and space. As one can expect from German quality, the interior materials are a high standard, the infotainment system is responsive and high quality and driving the EV is a pleasure. The 80 kWh EV battery has been placed below the floor of the electric vehicle (EV), with good interior space (headroom and legroom) for the rear seat passengers. The e-SUV can be charged in under 35 minutes using a 150 kW public DC charger. The iX3 has won the prestigious WhatCar? Car of the Year award.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric SUV

The all-electric Ford Mustang SUV was launched to much pomp and show in LA in November 2019.  Determined to show its confidence, Ford chose an aircraft hangar close to the operations of SpaceX for the launch. SpaceX is another undertaking by the Tesla co-founder Elon Musk.

This is the first non-sports car to use the Mustang marque. The name has been inspired from the Mach 1 variant of the first-generation Mustang. The all-electric SUV Mach-e went on sale in December 2020 and has already won the prestigious North American SUV of the Year Award. The Mach-e is manufactured at the Ford plant in Mexico but is also expected to be manufactured in China. The pure electric five-door Ford SUV is built on a brand-new EV architecture (Global Electrified 1: GE 1).

Ford is hoping to build success on the legacy of the Mustang internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. Early indications suggest that the all-electric Mustang SUV is well positioned to succeed. Though the price is higher than other cheaper electric SUV’s, the build quality, specifications, interior space and electric performance of the Mach-e SUV does make it a good choice for consumers seeking to migrate to zero-emission electric driving.

The SUV EV is available in two battery options: 98.7 kWh (Extended Range) and 75.7 kWh (Standard Range). The Extended Range (ER) can add up to 73 miles every 10 minutes (150 kW DC charging) and can be charged 10-80% in 45 minutes.

The Jaguar I-PACE Electric SUV

The Jaguar I-Pace battery-electric vehicle (BEV) was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It is the first all-electric performance SUV from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Deliveries commenced in the second half of 2018. The model has won a number of awards in 2019 to include, the European Car of the Year, World Car of the Year, the Best Design and Best Green Car awards.

Though the Jaguar I-PACE was one of the first pure electric SUVs from a mainstream automotive manufacturer to challenge the dominance of Tesla electric cars, since 2018, many other car manufacturers have entered the zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) sector. Competition in the pure electric SUV segment is now fierce, with a number of EVs on offer at different price ranges.

The Jaguar compact electric SUV has a 90 kWh EV battery with a WLTP zero-emission electric range of 286 miles. Depending on driving style, weather conditions and the services used in the e-SUV, expect a real world range closer to 260 miles. However, that would be more than sufficient for most commutes, day and weekend trips. Depending on the cost of electricity, the cost per mile for driving on electric can be as low as 3 pence per mile. Bottom-line driving on electric miles is both cost efficient and eco-friendly!

The Jaguar BEV is practical and versatile without compromising on quality and comfort. The rear seats are comfortable for adults, with ample legroom and headroom and appropriate for most family requirements, to include, school runs, family outings, grocery shopping and a lot more! The interior quality of the pure electric SUV is high and driving is a pleasure.

The Tesla Model X Electric SUV

The Model X prototype was unveiled in 2012.  The mid-sized all-electric SUV with its Falcon wing doors has certainly contributed to Tesla’s cache.  The Model X was designed from the Model S platform and still retains much in common with the Model S.  The Model X deliveries commenced in late 2015.

Like other Tesla electric cars, the Model X has also claimed its fair share of awards.  In 2017, Forbes named the zero tailpipe emission SUV the ‘Best Vehicle of the Year’.  In the same year the Model X was also awarded the ‘Top Green Vehicle’ by the American Automobile Association. The Model X SUV also holds the unique distinction of achieving a Guinness World Record for the ‘heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle’. In 2018, the zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) towed a Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

As of 2021, the pure electric SUV is available in only two trims, the Long Range and the Plaid model.

The Tesla Model Y Electric Car

The Model Y is a Tesla Model 3 based crossover with inspiration also taken from the Tesla Model X SUV.  However the Model Y does not have the iconic ‘falcon wing doors’ used in the Model X. The Model Y has been developed to further increase the ‘mass market appeal’ of Tesla pure electric cars.  A strategy very similar to the successful Tesla Model 3.  However, unlike the Model 3, the Model Y has room for up to seven adults with an optional third row.  The extra seats are an additional cost.

The battery electric vehicle (BEV) is packed with technology, to include, 12 sensors to detect nearby vehicles, a 160 m forward facing radar for a long-range view of distant objects and 360 degrees cameras to provide maximum visibility. The Model Y has ‘Full Self-Driving’ capability (option priced at US$ 10,000 in the US).  The Model Y will compete head-on with the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV and also with the award winning Jaguar I-PACE electric SUV

Tesla commenced Model Y deliveries for the US market in early 2020 (6 months ahead of schedule). There are currently two trim options, but a third option is expected in due course.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric SUV

The Volvo XC40 conventional petrol and diesel variant has been available since 2017. The original XC40 SUV was awarded the prestigious Car of The Year accolade by WhatCar? in 2018.

However, Volvo has always had an intention to create a fully-electric (battery-electric vehicle) version of this compact SUV. Currently, the automotive manufacturer also offers a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and mild hybrid variant of this SUV. The pure electric Recharge was unveiled in October 2019. Like the internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, the all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge is also based on the Volvo 40.1 Concept.

The e-SUV is practical and versatile without compromising on quality and comfort. The rear seats are comfortable for adults, with ample legroom and headroom.
